Science Students Win Big at Industrial Design Competition

December 2025 – Marianopolis students’ creativity and problem-solving skills were on full display at the 4th edition of L’Odyssee de l’objet en 48h, an industrial design contest open to college students across Quebec. This year’s challenge to the more than 150 participants was to create a prototype for an innovative object based on a winter theme.

First Prize was awarded to Marianopolis students Eva Batal, Jiaqi Sun (both Honours Pure & Applied Science) and Julia Xing (Health Science) for their project SeLit, a heated mattress designed to reduce the risk of hypothermia in winter for people experiencing homelessness. Each student took home a trophy and a bursary of $1,000.

The Eco-Responsible Prize went to Marianopolis students Keyu Hu and Alexander Wang (both Health Science) together with Eric Yan (Pure & Applied Science) and Zhi Han Yan (Honours Pure & Applied Science) for their project CryoConvert, an organic waste biodegradation device adapted for cold climates using psychrophilic bacteria. Each student received a bursary of $500.

Congratulations to all for their ingenious design projects and thanks to the Réseau Technoscience, le ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie, and the Secrétariat de la jeunesse for supporting this initiative.
