    Opening hours

    The Library is open from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

    The Organ Loft (C-302) quiet study area is open Monday to Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

    LibGuides, LibAnswers and other research help

    LibGuides are specialized research guides that the librarians have put together to support many of the classes at Marianopolis. All of the guides are listed on the main page of the LibGuides site according to their course numbers.

    LibAnswers is a handy way to get the answers you need when you’re having trouble with research, citation, using databases, and other Library-related issues. Peruse our FAQ and submit questions to be answered by the Library staff. You can also chat live with the Library staff.

    eBook databases

    ACLS Humanities eBook, a collection of over 5,400 seminal books in the humanities and related social sciences from more than 120 publishers and Michigan Publishing. Books in the HEB collection have been recommended and reviewed by scholars and constituent learned societies of the American Council of Learned Societies.

    Ebook Central With more than 60,000 items in a wide range of academic subjects, Ebook Central is the Library’s largest collection of eBooks. Most books in this collection can be viewed by an unlimited number of users, so they are almost always available.

    EBSCO eBooks A small but excellent collection of eBooks, aimed primarily at Commerce students. It uses the same interface as the EBSCO journal articles databases.

  • Journal and newspaper articles

    The Marianopolis College Library’s licenses for Education Source and ERIC are fully supported by the Research Support Fund, a government of Canada program that helps post-secondary institutions cover the indirect costs associated with federally funded research.

    Journal databases

    Cairn (TRIAL), a French-language Social Sciences and Humanities database, offering access to academic journals, ebooks, and magazines. Note that the trial is available on-campus only, through April 19. It is open to all faculty, staff, and students.

    EBSCO, a collection of 10 databases that you can search simultaneously. Choose as many or as few as you want. Here is a quick rundown of the EBSCO databases and their areas of focus:

    Érudit, a joint project of the Université de Montréal, Université Laval, UQAM, and several other partners, Érudit contains several Canadian research journals in French and English, including a large amount of Open Access content.

    JSTOR, a multidisciplinary archival database that covers a wide range of arts, science, and social science disciplines. Includes access to: Archival Journal Collections (Arts & Sciences I-XV, Business IV, Hebrew Journals, Ireland, Life Sciences, and Public Health Journals), Thematic Collections (Lives of Literature, Security Studies, and Sustainability), and Primary Source Collections (19th Century British Pamphlets, World Heritage Sites: Africa, Struggles for Freedom: Southern Africa, and Global Plants).

    ProQuest: Canadian Business and Current Affairs Database, a multidisciplinary database of Canadian content. It includes Canadian magazines and scholarly journals that cover a wide range of subjects in the social sciences, humanities and sciences.

    Google Scholar is a search engine that can be used to find additional online journal articles. Using this specific link provided will also connect your Google Scholar searches to the Library subscription databases, providing you full text access to some of the articles you find through the search engine. Note that not everything you find in Google Scholar will be available in full text. Look for articles with links in the right-hand column of the search engine to access full text PDFs when available, and avoid sources that do not include a full text link.

    Newspaper databases

    ProQuest: Canadian Major Dailies contains articles from all of the major English-language Canadian newspapers. Coverage includes the latest issue and, in many cases, goes back to the late 1970s/early 1980s.

    The Chronicle of Higher Education, North America’s largest newsroom dedicated to reporting on colleges and universities. The online version of the Chronicle offers all current articles available in the print edition, as well as an archive dating back to 1989. There are also special yearly reports, curated focus collections, daily and weekly newsletters, trend data and more.

    Art image database

    ARTstor, an extensive image library for the arts and sciences. It contains digital images from major museum collections around the world, archival images, and images of important works of architecture.

    Art research database

    Oxford Art Online contains the entire Grove Art Encyclopedia, with peer-reviewed articles by nearly 7000 scholars around the world, with images, biographies, and links to additional resources.

    Film databases

    Audio Ciné Films, a streaming database of more than 800 major feature films from Walt Disney Studios, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, MGM Studios, HBO, and more. It includes classics as well as modern films. Please note that film playback for ACF is currently not supported on all iOS devices, including all Apple phones and tablets.

    CAN-CORE Academic Video, a collection 100% Canadian produced educational videos, including documentaries from major producers such as CTV and McIntyre Media. The database includes a strong focus on content created by and about Indigenous peoples of Canada.

    Criterion On-Demand, a streaming video database of over 3000 major feature films from Warner Brothers Studios, Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Studios, Miramax Studios, and more. It includes classics as well as modern films.

    Curio, an online database of television series and documentaries created and maintained by the CBC/Radio Canada.

    Films On Demand, a streaming video database of documentary and feature films from a wide range of sources, including the BBC, PBS, TED, National Geographic, and more.

    National Film Board of Canada / Office National du film du Canada, a database of NFB/ONF-produced films, including Canadian documentaries, experimental films, and more.

    Oxford English Dictionary, the premier dictionary of the English language, the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short, includes the modern definitions of words as well as details on their historical origins.

    Encyclopedia and reference databases
    Encyclopedia Britannica, a general encyclopedia that contains brief information on a wide range of subjects.

    Encyclopedia Universalis, a French-language general encyclopedia that contains brief information on a wide range of subjects.

    First Research, a database of hundreds of continuously updated industry profiles, including everything from profiles of the automobile industry to the vending machine industry. It also has economic profiles for all of the Canadian provinces, as well as all of the American states.

    Gale eBooks, a collection of over 300 specialized reference sources on a wide range of topics. Of particular interest is the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, The Encyclopedia Judaica, the New Catholic Encyclopedia, The African American Almanac, and the Encyclopedia of World Biography.

    Salem Press Online, a platform for specialized reference works from Salem Press and Grey House Publishing. Our current Salem Press holdings include:

    Magill’s Medical Guide, 9th & 8th editions, which covers disease, disorders, treatments, procedures, specialties, biology, and medical issues. Includes sidebars that address recent developments in medicine and concise information boxes for all diseases and disorders for quick reference;

    Masterplots, 4th edition, with 2010-2018 supplement, a collection of 2,407 essays about English-language and world literature. Each essay examines a literary work in detail, giving plot synopses, critical theories about the work, and resources for further reading;

    Notable African American Writers, 2nd edition, which includes 500 detailed author biographies, topical entries on their works, primary documents, and more;

    Digital Literacy: Skills and Strategies, which provides a comprehensive collection of essays to help students, educators, and researchers understand the key and fundamental terms associated with digital literacy.

    Database access

    All databases listed in the above sections may only be accessed by current Marianopolis students, faculty, and staff.

    Copyright

    The College’s Copyright Policy outlines the rules that the Marianopolis community must follow when using copyrighted material.

    Copibec’s exclusions list indicates the categories, works and publishers that are not covered by the College’s license with that organization. Under the College’s Copibec license, members of the College community may reproduce 10% or 25 pages (whichever is less) of a work that is intended specifically for college-level education, or 15% or any other book or periodical covered by the Copibec agreement. For reproductions that exceed that or to copy any items on the exclusions list, students should contact Information Services Librarian Matthew Flanagan and Marianopolis employees should consult the Copyright section of the Launchpad.

  • Loan periods and fines

    • To borrow Library items, students must present their Marianopolis College ID card.
    • At the time of checkout, students must take note of the date and time that their items are due.
    • If a student returns an item after its due date or due time, the item will be considered late and the student will be charged the corresponding fine.
    • A student may be fined for multiple late items.
    • When a student has unpaid fines that $4.00 and more, their borrowing privileges will be suspended. When the fine is paid, their borrowing privileges will be reinstated.
    • At the end of each semester, students must pay all outstanding fines. Failure to do so will result in a temporary block on the student’s Omnivox account. This temporary block prevents the student from viewing their grades and other information.
