Peer Tutoring

The Marianopolis Peer Tutoring Project is funded by special grants from the Ministry of Education for the general support of students and for Peer Tutoring in the Sciences. It is one of the initiatives of the Marianopolis Plan for Success.

What is peer tutoring?

Put very simply, it is students helping students.

Typically, the tutor and client meet once a week and together they address difficulties the student client has encountered with a specific course subject. The service is free of charge.

Peer tutoring benefits both students and tutors. Students who need assistance benefit by getting help from tutors who have been successful in a similar course and are in a unique position to help others learn the material. In the past, clients have noted improvements in grades and greater confidence about the course material.

Our trained peer tutors are available to tutor selected students in:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • English
  • French
  • Mathematics (Arts/Science)
  • Physics
  • Quantitative Methods
What does it involve?

By registering in the Peer Tutoring Project, a client agrees to the following:

  • to receive free tutoring services from the tutor assigned by the Discipline Coordinator.
  • that all tutoring sessions will take place at the Learning Resources Centre (room F-317) at regularly scheduled appointment times.
  • the client must show up on time or advise the tutor well in advance if there is a cancellation.
  • to benefit as much as possible from this service, the client should come prepared with the appropriate material and questions/topics to be discussed.
  • the client will not ask the tutor to do assignments or homework.
  • the tutor will do her/his best to help the client but should not be seen as a replacement for the teacher.
  • the client will remain in good standing in the given class and at the College.
  • the client will promptly advise the Discipline Coordinator of any difficulty associated with the tutoring sessions, particularly if the client no longer requires the service.
  • the client will be receiving tutoring for no more than two disciplines at a time.
  • the client will freely and voluntarily accept to complete an evaluation questionnaire at the end of the semester.
What happens once I have completed the application form?

Available spaces are limited. All efforts are made to accommodate as many requests as possible but the completion of this application form does not guarantee placement. Potential clients can find out specific admission criteria or about their status of their application from the given Discipline Coordinators listed.

For how long can I receive tutoring?

Clients of the Project typically receive from 5 to 8 weeks of tutoring. However, tutoring may end if the client:

  • no longer desires to receive tutoring.
  • has achieved enough progress that he/she is assessed as no longer needing tutoring.
  • is not fulfilling the obligations listed above.

How do I apply to receive tutoring?

Applications can be made online by filling in the Application to Receive Tutoring.
