Enhancing Writing Skills
Students enrolled in the Social Science or Commerce program and who are experiencing difficulties with their writing skills in Social Science, Commerce or Humanities courses can receive assistance from a professional tutor who will assess the nature of the difficulties and propose one-on-one tutoring and/or group activities.
This project is unique in that it focuses specifically on students’ writing skills as demonstrated in their written assignments, and it is open to both ESL and anglophone students. The first meeting with the student includes an initial diagnosis to identify specific difficulties in writing and organization. Students come prepared with marked assignments and a list of their strengths and weaknesses in writing. Strategies and practice exercises are provided to help students develop writing skills, create outlines and rough drafts, and edit their work. This project also allows students to focus on specific problem areas, including sentence structure, paragraph structure, and the writing process. Most students have difficulty managing their time; this project demonstrates to students the benefits of multiple drafts since they use the sessions to edit and proofread their work.
Sessions are arranged in order to coincide with students’ deadlines for assignments. Follow-up sessions consist of meeting with the students to assess improvement and identify areas for further development. Follow-up sessions frequently demonstrate a marked improvement in areas which were the focus of previous tutoring sessions. Students who did not make multiple drafts in the past often begin to see the benefits of the writing process (outlines, drafts and editing), and develop time management skills.
