The Learning Connection

Many students registered in ENG 002 do exceptionally well in science and math courses, but speak little or no English outside of their English classes. Many students in ENG 002 begin at Marianopolis with low-intermediate levels of English language proficiency. In a reputable second-language program, such students would require more than 250 hours of instruction in a small classroom setting (under 20 students) in order to attain “college-entry” level proficiency in English. Consequently, intensive small group or individual tutorial sessions with qualified and experienced professionals are essential to help bring these students to the level needed for them to be successful in their CEGEP studies in English.

The goal of this project is to further increase the level of English language proficiency and competency for these students in their first semester of study at Marianopolis.  By offering extra hours of help in the Fall semester, the English department can help these students to perform better in all their courses from the time they begin their studies at Marianopolis.

The students targeted for this project are those registered in the Fall session in English 002 and English 101 who will require significantly more work in English than the 150 hours their two courses will provide in order to attain college-entry level competency. In the past two years, although all students registered in ENG 002 received at least one tutoring session, approximately 30 students per year participated in the TLC project on an ongoing basis throughout the fall semester.
