Lab Apprenticeship
Students in the Science program have the opportunity to visit professional research laboratories where they gain hands-on experience. Students spend a minimum of 16 hours in a professional scientific setting (research laboratory or medical clinic) participating in scientific activities and learning something about the life of a research scientist. Many of our students have found this to be a decisive experience in terms of their career choices.
Approximately 100 students participate in this project each year. The number of clinical positions has increased over the years, with 50 research scientists (and an undisclosed number of their graduate students and associates) from 16 universities, hospitals, research institutes participated in 2005. Some of the research laboratories where our students have worked in the past include:
- Biotechnology Research Institute of the National Research Council of Canada
- Nortel
- Montreal General Hospital Research Institute
- Royal Victoria Research Institute
- McGill Cancer Center
- Mcgill Bio-Medical Engineering Department
- Université de Montréal
- Montreal Heart Institute
- Montreal Children's Hospital
- Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital
Fourth-term Science students may elect to participate in The Lab Apprenticeship Project to satisfy the Comprehensive Assessment (Épreuve Synthèse) requirement for graduation. For the purposes of the Épreuve Synthèse, the requirements for all students are as follows:
- a one-page typed Abstract of the research or clinical activities
- a 2-3 page logbook of the activities observed or participated in (typed, double spaced)
- Self-Evaluation Form on Program Goals
- Student Evaluation Of The Lab Project form
- hand-written thank you notes for the lab directors and supervisors
