Arts Trip to New York, October 10-12, 2008
Students were introduced to New York with a walk from the hotel to the Museum of Modern Art, where a highlight was the exhibition “Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night.” The evening featured a group dinner at the Swizz Restaurant, run by Canadian chefs. The next day included a detailed guided tour of the Cloisters Museum, followed by a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Marianopolis faculty gave individualized tours. Beautiful weather prevailed as Professor Michael Sendbuehler took students on a lively excursion through Central Park. That evening, students were free to explore the city. Some chose to do a little shopping, stroll through Soho, visit the Guggenheim Museum and the Natural History Museum or end the day with a Broadway show. On the last morning of the trip, students were given some free time before boarding the bus and heading to the DIA: Beacon Museum, on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, N.Y. Guides gave detailed tours of the Dia Art Foundation's renowned collection of art from the 1960s to the present.

Here are some of the comments we received from participants in the 2008 New York trip:
“Awesome adventure…. Awesome variety. I definitely see museums another way. I really enjoyed the overall atmosphere of the trip and the fact that the whole time we were trying to soak up as much info (artistic and cultural) and have as much fun as we could.”
“It was a great trip. I loved seeing the stuff I’d learned about in class – especially at MOMA which had Mondrian and Pollock. It was fantastic. Too little time but well worth it. There aren’t really any words to articulate how much I loved it.”
“It was just a bit short, but totally awesome. I had a great time! It was great to see a lot of the artwork that I looked at in class, even at the Cloisters. The choice of museums was great!”
“I was truly inspired by the trip and looking at the art work... I actually liked New York – no, I loved it! I thought I might not enjoy it because it’s so packed, but my experience was very positive. There is a big difference with this city and Montreal.”
“I didn’t do the tour at the MET but went by myself. The museum is great as usual. Highlight of my trip! We saw a lot of art work studied in Renaissance art, ancient art, and Ancient Civilization. The teachers that came with us were great.”
“… the teachers and students were really cool. The bus driver too. Good transportation and accommodation.”“Good trip overall, interesting activities, good hotel accommodations and all for a reasonable price.”
“The museums were absolutely outstanding and it’s impossible to name a favourite. There’s something on the trip for everyone an it’s a shame it was so short.”
“The organization was good. We had enough leeway without being lost. The food was very good, and the activities were as well, though more time at the MET would have been really appreciated.”
“The Beacon museum was really interesting and different – no one knew about it before!”
“On this trip (the last day at Dia Beacon) I learned to appreciate artists like Serra and learned that the atmosphere that the artwork is placed in also plays a part to the perception of art.”
“The activities were interesting and it gave us the chance to explore and learn more about the city.”
“Not being in an arts program, the trip was a very refreshing break from [my] science courses. I was able to learn many things about sculptures, Central Park, impressionism, and the trip to Dia Beacon helped me look at art in a different way.”
