Peer Tutoring

The Marianopolis Peer Tutoring Service is funded by special grants from the Ministry of Education for the general support of students and for Peer Tutoring. It is one of the initiatives of the Marianopolis Plan for Success.
What is peer tutoring?
Put very simply, it is students helping students.
Typically, the tutor and tutee meet once a week and together they address difficulties that the tutee has encountered with a specific course subject. The service is free of charge.
Peer tutoring benefits both tutees and tutors. Students who need assistance benefit by getting help from tutors who have been successful in a similar course and are in a unique position to help others learn the material. In the past, tutees have noted improvements in grades and greater confidence about the course material.
Our trained peer tutors are available to tutor selected students in:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Economics
- English
- French
- Mathematics (Arts/Science)
- Physics
- Quantitative Methods
What does it involve?
By registering in the Peer Tutoring Service, a tutee agrees to the following obligations:
- I will receive free tutoring services from the tutor assigned to me by the Learning Resources Centre (LRC).
- Agrees that all tutoring sessions must take place in the LRC (room F-317) at regularly scheduled appointment times.
- I understand that I must show up on time or advise my tutor at least 24 hours in advance that I cannot attend the predetermined appointment.
- I will attend all my tutoring sessions unless I have a very good reason to cancel. Not showing up or asking to reschedule more than once may lead to the cancellation of my privilege.
- I understand that not attending my classes regularly will result in the termination of further tutoring assistance.
- I understand that the tutor will do her/his best to help me but should not be seen as a replacement for my teacher.
- I will try to benefit as much as possible from this service by coming prepared to the sessions with the appropriate material and questions/topics to be discussed.
- I will not ask the tutor to do assignments or homework for me.
- I will promptly advise the LRC of any difficulty associated with my tutoring sessions, particularly if I no longer require the service.
- I will be receiving tutoring for no more than two disciplines at a time.
- I, freely and voluntarily, accept to complete an evaluation questionnaire at the end of the semester.
What happens once I have completed the application form?
Available spaces are limited and are allocated on a priority basis. All efforts are made to accommodate as many requests as possible but the completion of the application form does not guarantee placement. Selected applicants will be contacted via MIO (Omnivox).
For how long can I receive tutoring?
Typically, tutees receive from 5 to 8 weeks of tutoring. However, tutoring may end if the tutee:
- no longer desires to receive tutoring.
- has achieved enough progress that he/she is assessed as no longer needing tutoring.
- is not fulfilling the obligations listed above.
How do I apply to receive tutoring?
Applications are made online by filling in the Application to Receive Tutoring.
Potential tutees can find out more about the Peer Tutoring Service, specific admission criteria or about the status of their application by contacting the Learning Resources Centre (room F-317), ext. 270.
