Services & Policies
To borrow Library materials, students must present their College I.D. cards at all times.
LOAN PERIODS: Books from the Circulation Collection may be borrowed for 14 days. A maximum of 20 items may be borrowed at a time. Periodicals may be taken out of the Library to be photocopied, but they may not be borrowed overnight. Reserve materials are usually loaned out for 2 hours, although some books may be taken out overnight, or for 3 days, or for 7 days. Reference material may be taken out for 2 hours but can go out overnight with special permission from a Librarian.
RENEWALS: Books from the Circulating Collection may be renewed once for an extra two weeks; these renewals may be done at the Library (without the books in hand, as long as the student has his or her College ID), online via My Account, or by telephone at (514) 931-8792.
REQUESTS/HOLDS: Students may request that a book already on loan be placed on hold, so they are guaranteed to receive the book upon its return. If students are unable to locate a book or periodical on our shelves, they may request a search at the Circulation Desk. Staff will search for the item and inform the student of the results.
LIBRARY FINES: At the time of check-out, students must note the date and time their items are due. If they return the item after its due date or due time, the item will be considered late and they will be charged a fine. Here is a summary of the fines:

Abandoned Items: A fine of $5.00/item will be charged to students who borrow either Reserve, Reference or Films/Music materials and abandon them in the Library, Cafeteria, Student Lounge, Computer Labs, near the photocopiers, or anywhere else in the College.
Total Fines of $5 or More: Students will lose borrowing privileges temporarily if they have unpaid fines that are equal to or in excess of $5.00. Once the fine is paid, borrowing privileges will be reinstated.
RESERVE COLLECTION: The Reserve Collection comprises books, journals, and other heavily-used material that Marianopolis College instructors put aside for their students. This collection also contains science solutions and assigned readings, classified by course and instructor. Some reserve material is available electronically on the Cyber Reserves. All of these materials are listed online. The Reserve Collection is shelved behind the Circulation Desk, and the loan periods range from 2-hours to 7-days.
Overnight Reserves: Many reserve items can be borrowed overnight starting at 4:00pm Monday to Thursday, and over the weekend starting at 2:00pm on Friday. They must be returned by 8:30am the following school day. Please note that we cannot loan out a reserve book when there is only one copy on the reserve shelves.
REFERENCE ASSISTANCE: Reference service is provided from 7:30 to 6:00, Monday through Friday. The librarians help students and Faculty with the Library catalogue and computer resources, provide research assistance, and answer questions about the Library, its policies and collections.
PHOTOCOPIERS: There are two photocopiers located outside of the Library. These machines do not accept change; they operate on a swipe card system. On the back of your Marianopolis I.D. card is a magnetic stripe which will activate the machine. Each August, first-year students are given $2.50 of credit on their cards. Additional funds may be loaded onto the I.D. card at the self-service Omnivox kiosk in the Library. Students unsure of how to use a photocopier should ask one of the Library staff to give a demonstration.
Bibliographic Instruction
INDIVIDUAL HELP: Library instruction is an integral part of our reference service. Reference service is provided Monday through Friday, from 7:30 to 6:00.
COLLEGE COURSES:
Introduction to College English: All incoming students are required to take this course, which includes a Library Orientation session and a session on Academic Integrity designed and run by the Library staff.
Research Methodology: All Social Science (300.01) and Commerce (400.01) students are required to take this course, which includes an advanced library assignment, designed and administered by Library staff. This assignment covers the Library's collections in detail, and includes segments on searching our Library collections for resourcs on specific topics, and searching online journal and newspaper databses, as well as searching for authoritative sources of information on the Web.
Other: Instructors sometimes include in their classes a library assignment of their own design, intended to acquaint students with the sections of the Library most relevant to their subject. Alternatively, the Information Services Librarian designs presentations on how to research precise subjects with the assistance of the instructor.
