Health Science or Pure & Applied Science?

The two profiles, Health Sciences and Pure and Applied Sciences have 9 out of 12 common course requirements in Sciences and Mathematics, within the Specific Education component, as well as common requirements in the General Education component. The diploma of collegial studies for students graduating in the science program will list "Natural Sciences", without distinguishing Health Science or Pure & Applied Sciences. The reason for the profiles is to help plan for elective courses in order to meet prerequisites for certain fields of study at university.
The Health Science profile (200.B1) leads to university studies in health-related fields such as medicine, dentistry or pharmacy. This profile is best for the student whose main interests are in biology and chemistry.

The Pure and Applied Science profile (200.B2) is the straightest path to university studies in engineering, architecture, pure sciences, mathematics or actuarial sciences.

If you are undecided, we suggest that you follow the Pure and Applied Science stream, as it allows more flexibility. Whichever profile you start with, there is no problem in changing profiles during and after your first year,since the courses you take in your first two semesters are required for both profiles.

More precisely, as the table below illustrates, whether you are in Health Science or Pure and Applied Science, you will have to take the same nine required courses, called the “Ministerial Block.”   To complete the twelve program-specific courses, you choose from the “Institutional Block” of three elective courses, of which one must be MAT-LCX, unless you are granted an exemption.

If you are in Health Science: University requirements specify a biology and a chemistry course as electives, leaving you to choose one more course from the list in the column headed Health Science.

If you are in Pure and Applied Science: You have three choices from the list of courses in the column headed Pure and Applied Sciences.

BIO = BiologyCHE = Chemistry;   MAT = Mathematics;    PHY = Physics;
PRO = Computer Science
