Enriched Courses

At Marianopolis students in the Science Program benefit from the opportunity of enrichment in the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Students choose individually, according to their personal interests, which courses they wish to follow in the enriched format. A certain number of enriched courses are also a requirement for the Honours Science Certificate.

The enriched courses treat the material in greater depth than would be found in the regular sections of the course. Additional topics are included to provide a more comprehensive preparation for future university studies in special areas such as engineering, architecture, economics, physics, mathematics and the life sciences. While course work in the enriched sections is more challenging, final exams are consistent in level with exams in the regular sections. It should be noted that enriched classes are grouped with the regular classes for the purpose of the R-score calculation.

The enrichment is provided in Mathematics and Physics as a separate section of the course, and in Biology and Chemistry within a regular section of the course. Separate enriched sections are offered only in specific semesters and have specific pre-requisites (see list below). When enrichment is done within a regular section, students are provided additional literature to read in preparation for an enrichment exam. A minimum grade is required on the enrichment exam to obtain an enrichment attestation for the course (80% in biology and 75% in chemistry).

An attestation certifying that students have taken enriched courses is provided by the Registrar's office so that students may include it with their application for university.

Notes:

  1. Courses labelled (E) are separate sections of the enriched course; others provide the enrichment option to interested students within the regular course.
  2. The usual sequence in Physics is PHY-NYA, NYC, NYB.  Students wishing to do the enriched courses in physics must complete MAT-NYA (Calculus I) by the end of their first semester.
