Summary of the main findings of the
Commission d’évaluation de l’enseignement collégial:
Social Science and Commerce program
MarianopolisCollege
In 1996-1997, the Social Science program of all of the colleges of Quebec was evaluated by the Commission d’évaluation de l’enseignement collégial. The Commission requested the submission of a report, as well as supporting data, from each college offering the program. A team from the Commission visited each of the colleges to evaluate them and produced a final report as to the state of the quality of the program in each of the institutions. Such a team visited Marianopolis College on April 29-30, 1996. The following is a brief summary of the findings of the Commission, extracted from the final report sent to Marianopolis College in December 1996:
- Marianopolis College was found to have a Social Science program of quality.
- The Commission recognized that the College had strong students, enjoyed a very good reputation and is stimulating for its students.
- In the Social Science department, students are followed very closely; this is done throughout the entire life of a student at the College.
- The demands made on the students by the Social Science department are such that, according to the Commission, they are well prepared for university studies. In part, this is because much is demanded of the students at the College.
- A great variety of pedagogical methods are used by the teachers.
- The Commission described as “remarkable” the help extended by the teachers to their students. It acknowledged that Social Science teachers display confidence in their students and treat them with respect.
- Students rated the availability of their teachers as “great” and the Commission found that to be a tremendous asset for the College.
- According to the Commission, the pedagogical and technical tools put at the disposal of the Social Science students by the College were “remarkably varied”.
- There is intense academic and social life at the College. The Commission found that a strong spirit of cooperation permeates the relations between administration, faculty and students. This resulted in greatly enriching the life of all members of the college community.
- The Commission found that the Social Science teachers were qualified, competent and experienced. Yet the institution has brought in new blood to assure the continued value to the education provided.
- Standardized evaluations of the teachers have been introduced by the College. The Commission noted that this evaluation is viewed positively by the teachers.
- The Social Science department of Marianopolis was found to have the highest rate of graduation among all of the colleges of Quebec.
- The Commission praised the “fervor” with which the administration, the teachers and the other members of the personnel carry out their educative mission at the College.
Given the quality of the Social Science program at Marianopolis, the Commission did not make any specific recommendations to the College. The suggestions which it offered have already been implemented. Consequently, the Commission recognized that this would make an already good program even better.
