Certificate in Third World Studies
How do I get the Third World Certificate?
Before beginning, you need to pick up an application form, along with a passport, from either Professor Dolores Chew (Rm. B-419) or Professor Maurice Dufour (Rm. B-421).
In order to qualify for the Third World Studies Certificate, you must earn a minimum of 75 points by completing a combination of course work and certificate activities.
Eligible courses fall under two categories: “A” courses, which focus exclusively on Third World issues; and “B” courses, which have at least 15% content relating to the Third World. Selected courses in the following disciplines are eligible:
Anthropology, English, Humanities, Political Science, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Sociology, Economics, History, Modern Languages, Geography, Administration, Music and Science. The full list of eligible courses can be found on this page. The list is also posted each semester prior to registration on the Third World Studies Certificate bulletin board.
Three "A" courses count for 50 points. Two "A" courses and one "B" course count for 45 points. One "A" course and two "B" courses count for 35 points (you are expected to consult teachers of "B" courses for permission to apply the course toward the certificate).
The remaining points can be obtained on completion of a combination of the activities listed on the page Certificate Activities. The designation “maximum” after each activity indicates that you cannot obtain more than the allotted points for the activity in question. You should consult the weekly “What’s Up?” and the Third World Studies bulletin board every week for upcoming lectures and other events.
For each activity or course attended, you are expected to write a brief report (one or two pages) and to submit it to a Certificate coordinator. The report should include a summary of the activity and a critical reflection on how the activity has contributed to your understanding of a Third World issue. You are also asked to complete the appropriate entry in your passport. Once all the Certificate requirements have been complemented, passports should be left with either Dolores Chew or Maurice Dufour. Your Certificate will be awarded at graduation.
