Certificate in International Studies
The International Studies Certificate is designed to enhance your knowledge of various contemporary nations, societies and cultures while increasing your understanding of contemporary world problems and relationships between nations and between cultures. Through specific courses the certificate will enable you to develop a feeling for various peoples and to learn approaches and techniques of the social sciences for analyzing relations between nations, world problems and various societies. Participation in related extra-curricular activities (lectures, conferences, committee work, excursions, trips, etc.) will enable you to gain experience in the application of these approaches, techniques and knowledge.
If you are interested in learning more about some of the following, from an international perspective, the International Studies Certificate is for you.
- comparative political systems, economic systems
- relations between nations
- modern wars, the nuclear threat and arms race, political terrorism
- problems of rapid cultural change, westernization, the breakdown of traditional values
- problems of economic discrepancies, poverty, the population explosion, rapid urbanization
- the international effects of technological change
- background information on major nations and peoples
- imperialism, dependency of small nations on the great powers
- ideologies and their international influence
- juntas and dictatorships
- problems of race and ethnic groups
The International Studies Certificate is open to students in all concentrations.
Requirements
As a student in the International Studies Certificate, you will be required to:
- complete successfully at least 5 eligible courses (including at least one from the History/Social Science list).
- follow the news about current international developments
- participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities related to your international studies (lectures, conferences, committee work, excursions, etc.)
- attend International Studies student-faculty get-togethers
At least 2 semesters of active participation (as described above) are required to earn the certificate. The structure of the program enables you to actively participate even if you are not registered in any International Studies courses in a particular semester.
The list of eligible courses for the certificate will be available in your Registration package. Courses on this list which you may have already taken at college, count for credit.
