History
History is an academic discipline that studies the past. To encourage critical thinking about current events and issues, the history courses taught at Marianopolis emphasize the multiple interpretations that can be given to historical facts and events.
All Social Science and Commerce students at Marianopolis take the required History of Western Civilization course, and those who continue within the discipline are able to choose from the additional history courses below. History courses are associated with the various Social Science themes, and students from other programs may include one of these as part of their complementary block.

In addition to the above, Canadian Constitutional History, Western Civilization II, Canadian Constitutional History, History of Russia, Economic History, and Historical Background of Contemporary World Issues may be among the history course offerings on occasion. Courses in history help prepare students for university studies in all of the social science disciplines, especially history and political science, as well as law and journalism. History courses also provide a valuable background for students continuing in international commerce and in the humanities, such as literature, art history, philosophy, and others. Individuals with training in history often become professors, lawyers, diplomats, administrators, politicians, journalists, archivists, or researchers.
The study of history develops skills in critical thinking, improved literacy, written and verbal communication and an understanding of the social dynamics which shaped the past, continue to do so in the present, and will form the future. History enriches your life, providing rich cultural contextualization; it broadens your horizons, liberating you from the narrowness of "here and now." It helps deepen your understanding of your own identity and of the world around you.
