Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of human beings and everything about them, from their earliest beginnings several million years ago to their many cultures which make up the world today.  As a discipline, it focuses upon the problems which humans everywhere face, upon how humans define these problems, and upon the various solutions which different people, at different times and places have offered to these problems.

Students in Social Science and Commerce at Marianopolis may select Humans: Stone Age to Space Age as one of their introductory level courses, and then may continue with upper level courses, thereby making anthropology one of their chosen social science disciplines.   Anthropology courses are associated with the various Social Science themes, and students in other programs may also select an anthropology course as part of their complementary block.

Courses in anthropology help prepare students for university studies in anthropology and other social sciences, other arts, sciences focusing on humans, and pre-professional studies such as administration, social work, law, education and medicine. Through their studies, anthropology students become acquainted with, and develop an appreciation for human diversity. In a multicultural society such as Canada , this helps the student develop into a more informed and more responsibly acting member of society.   Training in anthropology may also lead to such careers as archeology, forensic anthropology, museum administration, teaching and research.
