Physical Education

Physical Education, as part of General Education common to all programs, strives to fulfill its role in contributing to meet the Marianopolis Mission Statement; to encourage personal growth and academic excellence in our students. We emphasize that wellness can be achieved only through an integrated program that focuses on the whole person. This holistic approach to optimal wellness involves the emotional, the psychological, the social, the environmental, the intellectual, as well as the physical dimension of each person. We welcome all students to explore these varied dimensions of Wellness as they pursue their educational goals.

We also promote the global approach in the skill acquisition courses which encompasses the technical, the tactical, the psychological and the physical components of a chosen activity. Students take three Physical Education courses* during their two or three years at Marianopolis College. Courses are offered at an introductory to intermediate level to ensure optimal involvement for all students. Students are encouraged to try new activities in order to expand their life-long activity choices. In their first year students take Health & Physical Education (PHE 103) and Physical Activity (PHE 104). After successfully completing these courses, students take Active Living (PHE 105) in their second year.
*
(Students in the Arts and Sciences Program 700.A0 take two physical education courses, PHE-103 and PHE-104).

As Physical Educators, it is our mandate to promote health and to help students develop the competencies based on the knowledge and skills specific to our discipline. The process of achieving the competencies of PHE 103: "To realize the importance of physical activity in promoting healthy lifestyles", of PHE 104: "To demonstrate improvement in a physical activity" and of PHE 105: "To engage responsibly in physical activity which promotes health", is equally important and incorporates the acquisition of critical thinking, social interaction, communication and valuing which are defined as pedagogical units in our institution.
