Arts & Sciences (700.A0) – 59 1/3 credits
DEC Intégré – Sciences, lettres et arts
About the Program
Marianopolis welcomed its first Arts & Sciences cohort in autumn 2004. Before that the program had been available in some of the French colleges where it is known as Sciences, lettres et arts, or le Programme intégré.
What is it?
The Arts & Sciences program is intended for motivated and academically strong students, who “like everything.” Why should you apply?
Students graduating in this program acquire all the prerequisites to study in any program at university, with the possible exception of Music and Dance.
Modelled on the International Baccalaureate Program and the Liberal Arts undergraduate programs at leading universities in Canada and the United States, the Arts & Sciences program offers a wide range of courses in Art, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, thereby allowing students to experience a broader number of subjects before deciding on their future university studies. In particular, it offers:
- A strong science component (5 to 6 science courses plus 4 in mathematics);
- Courses in at least four different disciplines of Social Sciences;
- An opportunity for exploration of artistic ability;
- An enriched general education component; it is the only college program with a "Great Works" objective in both the English and Humanities part of General Education.
The program is integrative in nature, providing links through the use of common themes covered simultaneously by several courses, and culminating with an integrative seminar in the last semester for the fields of Art, Science and Social Science.
Who Should Take it?
Arts and Sciences is a challenging, multi-faceted program designed for strong and versatile students who "like everything" and want to experience a broad number of subjects before deciding on future university studies. You should apply to Arts and Sciences if you:
- have a strong record of achievement in all your academic subjects and demonstrate superior writing skills;
- want to continue studying a broad range of subjects;
- may still be deciding on the direction you wish to take at university;
- want to study major issues in the 21st century;
- have the urge to learn to think broadly and to approach situations from different angles, are not afraid to learn within and beyond a challenging curriculum;
- are keen on being part of a small community of learners within a wider college context.
Where Does it Lead?
The Arts and Sciences program offers access to all university programs with the exception of Dance, Fine Arts, and Music. The successful completion of the 10 math/science courses in the program qualifies students to be considered for and accepted into Science-based university faculties and programs. The successful completion of the 4 required social science courses and the math courses qualifies the students to be considered for Commerce programs and Social Science programs. Graduating students can apply for undergraduate university degrees in Science, the Social Sciences, or the Arts, as well as professional programs such as Architecture, Dentistry, Engineering, Law and Medicine.
Recent graduates of the Marianopolis Arts and Sciences program are pursuing a variety of university programs, reflecting the broad scope of subjects they experienced during their collegial studies.
